Enhancing Classroom Flexibility at the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic School Board
Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic School Board recognized the need for a more adaptable and engaging learning environment to support evolving educational methods. With traditional classroom layouts often limiting interaction and movement, the school aimed to implement a flexible design that would allow educators and students to transition seamlessly between different teaching and learning styles. This pilot project served as a testbed for future standardization, ensuring that classrooms, common spaces, and collaborative areas were designed to maximize usability, movement, and engagement.
Through a collaborative approach, live design sessions and thought-starter presentations, POI helped shape the vision for the new learning spaces. The client worked closely with design and furniture specialists to identify solutions that would enable classrooms to be easily reconfigured for different teaching modes, including lectures, independent work, and group discussions. The goal was to ensure that both educators and students had greater control over their environment, allowing for natural shifts in classroom dynamics throughout the day.
A key element of the redesign was the integration of agile furniture solutions that supported both movement and adaptability in the classroom. The introduction of Verb tables and Shortcut chairs allowed educators to easily reconfigure layouts to suit different teaching modes—shifting from traditional lecture setups to small-group discussions or independent work in minutes. These lightweight, mobile pieces supported a fluid learning experience and encouraged student engagement through choice and flexibility. In shared areas, Smith System collaborative tables created intentional gathering points for informal learning and peer collaboration, further reinforcing the school’s vision for dynamic, student-centered spaces. By selecting products that balanced versatility with comfort and durability, the team was able to create environments that could evolve throughout the day to meet the diverse needs of both students and teachers.
