Meeting The Demands Of Higher Ed
Algoma University set out to create a campus environment that would support the evolving demands of higher education. With a focus on flexibility and accessibility, the project incorporated large fixed-seating classrooms, open-plan workstations, flexible classroom layouts, and ancillary spaces for students and faculty alike. As the university expanded to their Brampton campus, they initially lacked a standardized AV system. A temporary solution provided early-stage functionality, meeting the requirements for clear audio and visual presentations to ensure functional learning experience as the full scope of the requirements for the classrooms were examined. As the needs of remote and hybrid learning evolved and continued to evolve over time, the AV solution was refined based on ongoing feedback, ultimately leading to a consistent, user-friendly standard across classrooms.
The classrooms were designed to prioritize simplicity and accessibility, with fully integrated Crestron technology in the podiums that made tools intuitive for faculty, while students enjoyed unobstructed access to content. Each space, from lecture halls to lounges, were planned to promote comfort and interaction, aided by curated furniture solutions such as MDR’s fixed theatre seating and Steelcase Verb tables, which support collaborative and flexible learning arrangements.
The project’s success stemmed from close collaboration and a deep understanding of the evolving needs of the educational environment, ensuring that each detail aligned with Algoma’s vision for a forward-looking campus. This shared commitment allowed Algoma University to create a cohesive and adaptive campus space that not only meets today’s needs but is equipped for future advancements. Seeing students and faculty use the new spaces reinforced the value of these integrated solutions, establishing Algoma as a model for responsive, flexible education spaces.
