The Patient Support Centre
The Patient Support Centre (PSC) at SickKids is a significant addition to its campus as part of Project Horizon, marking a major step in transforming SickKids into a hospital of the future. This 22-storey tower serves as an education, training, and administrative building, consolidating core hospital services into a central hub. With spaces dedicated to collaborative work, learning, and wellness, the PSC is designed to enhance staff productivity and well-being across 30 departments, supporting nearly 3,000 staff members.
The scope of this project included furnishing administrative offices, training and teaching areas, conference rooms, collaborative and social spaces, as well as outdoor furniture. Each space was tailored to create a supportive environment for staff. A unique design feature of the PSC is a series of color-coded floors, which use blue, green, pink, and purple tones for easy floor identification and align with the building’s vibrant, welcoming aesthetic. By using this design feature as a benchmark, we selected a variety of furniture, fabrics and finishes that create a cohesive look and enhance both function and design within each area.
This project aimed to meet the demanding standards of a world-class institution like SickKids. Using a carefully selected range of furniture systems, the solution included Steelcase and Steelcase partner brands including Coalesse, Blu Dot, as well as Landscape Forms for the outdoor areas. Each piece was chosen for its quality, durability, and ability to adapt to the daily needs of a busy healthcare organization.
The depth of the Patient Support Centre project was truly remarkable, with every element carefully selected to create a cohesive and functional environment. From the earliest planning stages, SickKids and its project teams worked closely together, ensuring that every decision aligned with the hospital’s goals. The distinct colors, rich textures, and thoughtfully chosen furnishings all contributed to a supportive and inspiring space that meets the unique demands of a leading healthcare institution. This collaborative approach reinforced the partnership between SickKids and its project teams, reflecting SickKids’ commitment to resilience, wellness, and flexibility. The Patient Support Centre sets a new standard for administrative and educational environments, aligning with SickKids’ vision of a future-ready campus that fosters innovation and excellence in every detail.
